Salt Lakes
Vast, empty, wind-blown and forgotten…….these salt flats on the ceiling of the world are a picture of solitude and contemplation.
This work was inspired by the many years I’ve spent on dry salt lakes in the high Andes of Argentina and Chile. This is a lonely, desolate, wind-swept and barren world, akin to the Arctic and Antarctic “deserts”. Above all it’s a place of big skies, and endless salt flats extending to the horizon.
Texture has always fascinated me and the salt crust provides interesting variations. The triptych format is something I’ve always liked and felt appropriate for these “big” landscapes, highlighting the texture and scale in separate segments.
