An evening with Shirley Steel

Abstract photography, sometimes called non-objective, experimental, conceptual or concrete photography, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials.

Our guest speaker Shirley Steel has a passion for photography that was unleashed when she retired from education in 2010. Since then her knowledge and style have developed considerably. She has had many opportunities through courses, workshops, mentoring, travel and exhibitions to nurture her passion for photography. Her style is more impressionism than realism.

Shirley demonstrated how simple it can be to create Abstract images from the simplest of objects and by using Apps on her iPhone and iPad such as

  • Snapseed

  • Distressedfx

  • Enight

  • Mextures

Below is a sample of suggested Instagramers to look up for inspiration.
